Appalachian State Softball Winter Clinics

App State Softball is excited to announce 2019 Winter Clinics to be held Sundays, January 20th and February 3rd. Our Winter Clinics consist of different sessions that focus on infield, hitting, outfield, and pitching and catching. Each session's instruction and individual still work will be led by the App State coaching staff and players. This will give athletes 2-3 hours of instruction, feedback, interaction, and the opportunity to showcase their skills for the App State Coaching Staff.   

Location: Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility (adjacent to Kidd Brewer Stadium) and Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium (weather permitting).

Ages: All clinics are for ages 12 - high school senior

Sunday, January 20, 2019

     Pitchers/Catchers Clinic - $70

  • Check-in at 9:00 am
  • 10:00 am - 12:30 pm session
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Pitchers need to bring their own catchers who are NOT participating in the catching portion of the clinic.
  • All catchers need to bring catching gear.

      Infield Session - $55

  • Check-in at noon
  • 1:00 pm - 3;00 pm session

      Hitting Session - $70

  • Check-in at 2:30 pm
  • 3:30 pm - 6:00 pm session     

     Outfield Session - $55

  • Check-in 6:00 pm
  • 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm session

     Pitchers/Catchers Clinic - $70

  • Check-in at 8:00 am
  • 9:00 am - 11:30 am session
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Pitchers need to bring their own catchers who are NOT participating in the catching portion of the clinic.
  • All catchers need to bring catching gear.

     Infield Session - $55

  • Check-in at 11:00 am
  • 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm session

     Hitting Session - $70

  • Check-in at 1:30 pm
  • 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm session

 What to bring:

  • Glove
  • Bat
  • Batting Gloves
  • Any other Softball equipment you own
  • Tennis Shoes
  • Cleats
  • Water Bottle
  • Snacks (no meals will be provided)
  • Good Attitude

Weather premitting, you will be outside. Be sure to bring appropriate clothing.




App State  Softball Coaching Staff

Shelly Hoerner, Head Coach

Head Coach Shelly Hoerner brings 18 years of head coaching experience with more than 500 career wins to the App State program.
Hoerner comes to App after a four-year stint as Head Coach at Georgia Tech, where she earned her 500th career win in 2016. At Tech, her team had the highest GPA in the athletic department in 2016 and 2017, averaging over a 3.2 all four years. Hoerner coached the Yellow Jackets to four wins over nationally-ranked opponents, with three Yellow Jackets earning All-ACC honors. 

Prior to Georgia Tech, Hoerner compiled a record of 254-206 at the College of Charleston, including a 105-72 mark in Southern Conference play. Named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 2007, she led the Cougars to a record of 37-20 overall, 15-8 in the Southern Conference.

Alex Hupp, Assistant Coach

Alex Hupp begins her first season at Appalachian State after joining Shelly Hoerner's staff in July. Hupp serves as the pitching coach and will also coach outfielders. She will also have a large hand in recruiting and assist in day-to-day operations.

Hupp comes to App State after two seasons as an assistant coach at Troy University, following a stint as the top assistant at East Tennessee State University in 2015. Hupp also served on the coaching staff at South Dakota State University as an assistant coach in 2013, and interim head coach in 2014. Before her time at South Dakota State, Hupp helped lead Emporia State University as an assistant coach to a combined 84-27 record over two seasons, including back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Regionals.

Shane Showalter, Assistant Coach

Shane Showalter will serve as an assistant coach while working primarily with hitters. Showalter, a softball coaching veteran of 21 years, joins the Mountaineer coaching staff with more than 16 years of head coaching experience under his belt.

Most recently, Showalter served on Austin Peay’s coaching staff for five seasons with the last two coming as the head coach of the Governors. Showalter boasts experience in coaching hitters, pitchers, infielders and catchers. After his first season, his squad earned the Ohio Valley Conference Team Sportsmanship Award.

(limited only by number, age, grade level and/or gender).
