The Appalachian State University (AppState) Youth Language and Leadership Academy (YLLA) is a competitive, rigorous, and fun academic program that helps students improve their English language proficiency and prepares them for
university life in the United States. The program provides a mixture of academic sessions in English language, leadership skills, and a variety of academic sessions across disciplines during the mornings. In the afternoons, students are exposed to a variety of fun, cultural, and outdoor activities that teach students about life in the U.S. highlighting the diversity that exists in Boone, NC, and across the U.S. The program is designed for students between the ages of 14-16 years.

Program Details: June 13 - July 11, 2020

Arrival: Students arrive at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Charlotte, NC on Saturday, June 13, 2020. Program staff will meet the group upon arrivals and transport them to Boone, NC. 

Departure: Participants depart for their home countries from the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Charlotte, NC on Saturday, July 11, 2020. Program staff will transport students from Boone to the Charlotte airport and help them
check in to their different flights.

Meals: Participants eat most meals at Roess Dining Hall unless otherwise marked on the program schedule.

Accommodations: Students reside in a residential hall on Campus.  Appalachian staff persons are assigned to live in the residential hall with the students.

Program Cost: $3,500.00

Deposit: $300.00 This fee is included in the total program cost and will only be refunded if documentation of a rejected visa is provided before the April 30th deadline. 

(Program cost includes all costs except international flight, U.S. visa application fees, and personal money for souvenirs)

Application Deadline: February 15, 2020 

U.S. Visas:  Letters of invitation for U.S. tourist visa applications will be sent to parents of successful applicants by February 21. If students are not successful in acquiring a visa by April 30, the student will be withdrawn from the program and the deposit will be refunded. Documentation of rejected visa is required in order to be refunded your $300 down payment. 


Final Payment: Once visa is acquired, the remaining balance of $3,200 will be due by May 15, 2020.  You may log into registration site anytime between now and May 1, 2020.  Payments may be made by MasterCard or Visa.
