Appalachian offers three hours of graduate/undergraduate credit to each participant who registers and pays for the institute by April 29th. New enrollees must submit the online Graduate Non-Degree application including all the required documentation by May 19th. Further application instructions will be emailed. Any institute registrations received after April 28th will be considered for non-credit only. The non-credit option is appropriate for license renewal if a University-issued letter stating the number of hours participated is accepted by your school system. (If uncertain, please check with your school system.)

University Highlights

classroom drummingFor more than eighty years, Appalachian State University has been a center of study for music students throughout the world. The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian offers a combined program of academic studies and professional musical training of unparalleled quality within a university framework. Individual attention, detailed musical and technical development, and the encouragement of each student's artistic potential in performance serve as the foundation of the program in vocal and instrumental studies.


Meals are available for purchase on campus at the Roess Dining Hall. There are also several excellent restaurant options within walking distance.


Housing is available in an Appalachian residence hall. Two bedrooms are connected by a bathroom to make a suite. Each bedroom has 2 twin beds. On the registration pages you have an option of Two per Suite (1 person per bedroom/2 per suite/2 per bathroom). Or you may choose Four per Suite (2 persons per bedroom/4 per suite/4 per bathroom).

Campus residence hall accommodations are from Sunday to Friday and include bed and bath linens, pillow, and a light blanket. Four per Suite is $127 per person. Two per Suite is $177 per person. If you register for Two per Suite, you may choose a suitemate. If you register for Four per Suite, you must have a registered roommate on your form, or you will be changed to Two per Suite and charged the higher rate. One per suite rate is $342.


Check-in will be held the afternoon of Sunday, June 18 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Check-out times will be June 23, from 7:00-9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon-2:00 p.m.


Classes will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, June 19, 2017 and conclude at noon on Friday, June 23 by noon. A complete schedule will be available in Monday's class.


All materials used in the institute will be provided.


You will be most comfortable in casual summer clothing and comfortable shoes that allow freedom of movement.


Full payment must accompany your registration. There is a $25.00 service charge for returned checks. You may cancel your institute registration on or before June 9 for a full refund minus $50 processing fee. After June 9, there will be no refunds.

Evening Highlights

Silver Burdett/Pearson is sponsoring a cook-out on Tuesday evening for all participants and their guests. Dress is casual. A Pig Pickin' with mountain music and square dancing ($15 per person) is scheduled for Wednesday evening. An evening jam session with local musicians is an option for Thursday.
