Registration Fee: $250 includes instruction, course notes, campus parking permit. Cost of meals are not included in this fee.
2020 Course Description
This class will be an immersion in music composition and improvisation and scaffold for success while incorporating movement and all elements of music. Participants will connect, reflect upon, and extend Schulwerk materials as well as create debut pieces that will guarantee ownership in the learning process. Included in the course will be mallet and recorder playing, movement, and endless creativity. Participants are encouraged to bring recorders as well as any instruments that are found in their daily instruction.
Featuring Anne Fennell, M.Ed
Anne Fennell is the National Association for Music Education Chair for the Innovation Council in the U.S., the current Vice President of the California Music Educators Association, and the Kindergarten-Grade 12 Music Program Manager for San Diego Unified School District in San Diego, CA, USA. She holds a Bachelors in Music Education, a Masters in Leadership Studies, Orff-Schulwerk certification Levels: I-II-III and over 90 graduate hours in music and education coursework. Her experiences include 32 years of teaching music composition and steel drum ensembles in grades 9-12, Kindergarten-Grade 8 Orff Schulwerk, and leading both vocal and instrumental ensembles in civic and professional performances as well as national conferences. She is a published author through Pearson Education, the GRAMMY Foundation, The Percussion Marketing Council, as well as Disney’s Little/Baby Einsteins. She presents nationally and internationally, including the national AOSA and NAfME conferences, China music education conferences through the support of the International Music Products Industry (NAMM) in Beijing and Shanghai, and ISME. She has received numerous state and national awards, including the 2020 Technology in Music Education National Teacher of the year, 2017 Magnet Schools of America Teacher of the Year, top 10 GRAMMY Music Educator Finalist for 2016, and top 3 Music Educator award from Music and Arts 2015.
Class check-in will be Monday, July 6, from 7:30-8:00 a.m. in the Hayes School of Music/Broyhill Music Center. Class begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and concludes each day at 4:00 p.m. Classes will be held Monday, July 6- Friday, July 10.
All materials used in the course will be provided.
You will be most comfortable in casual summer clothing and comfortable shoes that allow freedom of movement.

Housing is available in one of Appalachian's residence halls. Two bedrooms are connected by a bathroom to make a suite. Each bedroom has 2 twin beds. On the registration pages you have an option of one per suite (1 person with private bathroom) or two per Suite (1 person per bedroom/2 per suite/2 per bathroom). Or you may choose three or four per Suite (2 persons per bedroom/4 per suite/4 per bathroom).
Your roommate or suite-mate must be a registered participant of this program. If you do not have a roommate, you will automatically be assigned one of the same gender. If you wish to have a suite to yourself, please advise us. Linens are provided and consist of: 2 towels, 2 washcloths, 2 flat sheets, 1 pillowcase, 1 pillow, and 1 light blanket. Residents will check-in on Sunday, July 5. Linens are provided at check-in.
The residence hall has wireless internet but at times is difficult to access. To ensure uninterrupted internet service, you may wish to bring an Ethernet cord to use in the residence hall.

You may cancel your workshop registration on or before June 12 for a full refund minus a $50 processing fee. No refunds will be issued after June 12.
